Plaintiffs: 45 journalists and staff members

Media Outlet: Hürriyet

Requests: Redress for unfair dismissal

Court: İstanbul Çağlayan Courthouse

Case background:

45 journalists and staff members were sacked on October 30, 2019, without notice from the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet, which had the largest circulation in Turkey for decades. The dismissals marked an  upheaval at the newspaper, which was formerly owned by the independent Doğan Media Group and was sold to a pro-government conglomerate, Demirören Holdings in 2018, cementing the Turkish government’s control over the mainstream news market.

Journalists filed a lawsuit against the Demirören group requesting redress for unfair dismissal with no compensation. The first hearing in the case took place on February 27, 2020.

Next hearing is scheduled for April 17.
