“You and all journalists who seek to report truth in Turkey face tremendous difficulties, but we know that ‘no one can silence reality’,” IPI Executive Director Barbara Trionfi wrote. “We pledge to keep fighting for the rights of journalists to do their job and uphold the public’s right to share and receive information.”
The letter came in response to an open letter that Dündar penned from inside Turkey’s maximum-security Silivri Prison, west of Istanbul.
Dündar and Gül were arrested on Nov. 26 and placed in pre-trial detention on charges of aiding a terrorist organisation, espionage and disclosure of classified documents. The charges stem from a report published in Cumhuriyet on video footage of Turkish gendarmes’ search of a Syria-bound truck owned by Turkey’s intelligence agency that uncovered weapons.
Authorities say followers of the movement headed by Justice and Development Party (AKP) ally-turned-nemesis Fethullah Gülen planted the weapons to undermine support for the ruling AKP government and that the journalists, by reporting on the discovery, intended to advance the alleged plot.
That argument is similar to claims the government made in 2012, when nearly 100 journalists were behind bars in Turkey. AKP officials at that time claimed that journalists who reported on investigations into alleged coup plots or Kurdish issues were secretly acting as the “media wings” of illegal organisations.

Upon reading your recent open letter from Silivri Prison, I wanted to write you on behalf of the International Press Institute (IPI) and its Turkey National Committee to show our solidarity with you and Mr. Gül, and to say forcefully that you are not alone.
We were extremely troubled to hear of the decision to detain you and Mr. Gül. Our concern was shared by journalists and supporters of press freedom and free expression around the world, who roundly have rejected the shameful and unjust charges you face.
Please know that we support your journalistic work and that we will do all that we can to bring an end to your detention. We admire the bravery you have shown in your work, especially in an environment where press freedom is under such agonising pressure.
We also admire your bravery in the face of the case against you. While being the target of such disgraceful charges can be viewed as a badge of honour, so, too, is the grace and good humour you have shown in meeting them.
You and all journalists who seek to report truth in Turkey face tremendous difficulties, but we know that “no one can silence reality”. We pledge to keep fighting for the rights of journalists to do their job and uphold the public’s right to share and receive information.
We also thank you for standing up as a journalist for those rights and for working to serve Turkey and its people, despite the severe consequences you now face. We look forward to the day when you are freed and to a Turkey where all journalists may do their work without the fear of harassment, intimidation or the threat of unjust legal proceedings.

Silivri cezaevinden göndermiş olduğunuz açık mektubu okumamızın üzerine, Uluslararası Basın Enstitüsü ve Türkiye Ulusal Komitemiz adına, siz ve sayın Erdem Gül ile olan dayanışmamızı göstermek ve bir kez daha sizlere kesinlikle yalnız olmadığınızı söylemek için yazmak istedim.
Sizin ve Erdem Gül’ün tutuklanma kararını duyduğumuzda çok üzüldük. Bizimle beraber dünyanın her yerinden gazeteciler, basın ve ifade özgürlüğü savunucuları, endişelerimizi paylaşarak, yüzleşmekte olduğunuz bu utanç verici ve haksız suçlamaları hep birlikte, şiddetle reddetti.
Bilmenizi isteriz ki, bizler sizin gazeteciliğinizi destekliyoruz ve tutukluluğunuzun son bulması için de elimizden geleni yapacağız. Basın özgürlüğünün, böylesine acı verici bir baskıya maruz kaldığı bir ortamda, işinizde göstermiş olduğunuz cesur tutumunuza da ayrıca hayranlık duyduğumuzu belirtmek istiyoruz.
Bunun yanı sıra, aleyhinizde yürütülen bu dava boyunca takınmış olduğunuz cesur tavrı da son derece takdir ediyoruz. Böylesine yüz kızartıcı suçlamaların hedefindeyken dahi, bunları şeref madalyası olarak görüp, suçlamaları da oldukça nazik ve mizahi bir üslupla karşıladınız.
Gerçekleri ortaya çıkaran siz ve Türkiye’deki diğer bütün gazeteciler muazzam zorluklarla karşılaşıyorlar, fakat biliyoruz ki “gerçekler susturulamaz”. Gazetecilerin mesleki görevleri gereği sahip oldukları haklar için savaşmaya ve halkın bilgi alma ve paylaşma hakkını savunmaya devam edeceğimize dair size söz veriyoruz.
Ayrıca, çok vahim sonuçlarla karşılaşmanıza rağmen, bir gazeteci olarak bu hakları savunmanız ve ülkenize ve Türk halkına hizmet etmek için çalışmanız sebebiyle de, size çok teşekkür ediyoruz.
